Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director for the powerful Hurt Locker, while Bullock won both a Razzie and an Oscar on the same day, although not for the same film. Bullock, as gracious and down-to-earth as ever, actually turned up to receive her Razzie for the terrible 2009 comedy All About Steve.

There were a few upsets throughout the Oscar ceremony: a "Kanye" was pulled when Elinor Burkett stopped Roger Ross Williams, director of Best Documentary Short winner Music by Prudence, from giving his acceptance speech. What is with awards shows lately? Burkett, the producer of the same documentary refused to let Williams continue and later interviews revealed a definite rift between the two, including Burkett's accusation over Williams' 87 year old mother blocking her way to the stage. Done with such grace.

British costume designer, Sandy Powell, won her third Academy Award for her work on Young Victoria, but only oozed enough excitement to tell us she'd already won two others and felt greedy. It was nice for her to dedicate her award to those costume designers who would not normally get recognition though. kathryn-bigelow-best-director-pic-getty-868188750.jpg

Precious screenplay writer, Geoffrey Fletcher, earned his first Academy Award over Jason Reitman who was a clear favourite to win for Up in the Air. Oops! Regardless, they both were fantastic films and I am happy that Fletcher was proud and surprised enough to be emotional over his award.

And finally, The Hurt Locker raked in the awards last night. It won best picture, film editing, sound editing and sound mixing, and best original screenplay as well as earning Bigelow a spot in the history books. With her winning Best Director she is the first female to do so in the 82 years of the Academy Awards. Fantastic news for female filmmakers everywhere.

As a final note, was anyone surprised at how un-funny Baldwin and Martin were as hosts? Perhaps I had high expectations of them, but they simply did not make me laugh! What do you think?
